Oscar's Taco House: Reviews & Ratings
Inspired by the Express News article, I made sure to visit this spot before it closed its doors permanently. I'm so glad I did; the food was fantastic! My puffy taco plate and side of onion rings were incredibly satisfying. I only wish I had discovered this place sooner.
Well..I finally tried it and loved it..Been passing by this location for years and I had never tried it until now. I had the craving for some puffy tacos and Oscars did not disappoint.. I ordered the puffy taco plate which consists of three puffy tacos and rice & beans. Ur choice of beef, chicken, beef or chicken fajitas. You have to ask for avocado and sour cream which is an extra charge....be advised there are no refills on sodas as they do not have fountain drinks..so I settled for sweet tea. Total price for 4 plates and 3 drinks was approximatley 54 bucks.
Having driven past the building many times, It wasn't until I was there and parked, that I became aware that the entrance was on the neighborhood street side, and not the side facing Nogalitos. Following the many recommendations I had read online, I opted for "The Sleeper," a combination plate featuring 2 cheese enchiladas, a beef puffy taco, a chalupa, rice, and beans. My food arrived promptly, in less than 10 minutes from placing the order. The enchiladas, with nearly fully melted cheese, were generously smothered in a meaty chili. While the cheese enchiladas had decent flavor, I wasn't overly fond of the chili, which seemed akin to a beanless campfire chili with extra chili powder. The puffy taco, unfortunately, lacked the desired crispiness, with only a slight crunch at the very edge. The flavor reminded me of puffy tacos from the old Taco Hut, but even those were crispier. Adding some green salsa and salt brought these tacos to life, but still left me longing for a crisper shell. The beans were satisfactory, but the rice had a unique flavor profile. Although I couldn't pinpoint the taste, it seemed to be a tart & sweet spice, possibly tamarind. The rice wasn't bad, but definitely different. My entire meal with a canned soda was $12, an affordable meal, with a decently sized portions.
Yes, this gets five stars all across! If you grew up eating here, then you know. This place has not changed a bit, and that is fantastic. I had not been there in years and went today with my Cuzns Moni, Crystal & Ape's and had the best meal, service and the best time! Walked in and ran into one of our other cousins, Tiny, we hadn't seen in years! Thanks Oscars!!
Went to Oscar's Taco House (705 Barrett Place) and saw they had a cheese enchilada plate as the Thursday lunch special. The enchiladas were decent and I needed to add some salt to the beans and mix them with the rice to give them a little flavor. I mean the plate was $5.49 so I suppose it was okay. The carne guisada in the taco almost tasted like the meat was boiled, I know that probably sounds weird but idk. If we go back we may just have to try something different.
Flavor: A Service: B Tea: A Solo Dining: A We found this gem just as our office is about to move. The enchiladas are great but I actually think I like the fish more. The tartar sauce is good and the fish is crispy, hot, and fresh. Three large pieces of fish with fries for $9.50. You can’t beat that. I also want to try the chicken sometime. No matter what you’re feeling this hole-in-the-wall can fill you up.
Great food puffy tacos, fish plate and fried chicken are my favorites. The fried chicken takes 20 minutes since it's made fresh, we'll worth the wait. Old school local drive in. The wait staff is inconsistent and at times not proactive and it cost them the 5th star.
SERVICE: was a bit slow but once the server realized we were there it picked up from there. FOOD: took a bit to come out but being in the restaurant industry I know during lunch hour it gets crazy. Once food came out I personally thought the beans, chili, and rice needed salt, but overall it was pretty good. My boys ate their whole meal. PRICE: the prices were decent. For our family of 4 it cost us $46.17. What we ordered: CHIPS & SALSA BIG TEX BURGER WITH FRIES THE #2 OSCAR SPECIAL PLATE CHEESE ENCHILADA PLATE KIDS GRILLED CHEESE 4 SODAS
